Since receiving this donation, I created a rotation of sensory activities aligned with literacy activities each month. Last month, first grade students read the story \"Dig Dog Digs\" while working on reading fluency and comprehension. Then, students retold the story utilizing the sensory bin, which included kinetic sand, construction site manipulatives, and miniature toy dogs. Students brought the story to life and generated a new story with an alternative ending. These materials have also been used in a variety of ways. The same kinetic sand in the construction site was used by second graders as pretend pie dough to sequence the necessary steps to bake a pie while reading \"The Apple Pie Family.\" Students washed and peeled apples in the bin, rolled the dough into a pie crust, and baked it in a bin used as an oven. \r\n\r\nAll students from K-5th have benefitted from fun and engaging materials but my preschoolers have excelled as a result of the sensory bin area. Every week, students approach the sensory bin and knock on it to request \"open\" or ask \"what's in there today?\" When using a visual schedule, students often request moving the sensory bin picture as the first activity of the day. These tools has provided meaningful opportunities for students to work on their language skills (functional communication, describing, following directions, sequencing, story retell, naming actions/nouns). \r\n\r\nHaving manipulatives available has been great success. In the future, some students may benefit from having visual support near the sensory bin area indicating to the students the expectations of the area and on how to utilize the materials safely. Also, thematic visuals could support receptive language skills including pointing to named actions, identifying objects as described by their function, understanding prepositional concepts, and/or understanding sentence structure. I am very excited to see the sensory bins grow and evolve according to my students' needs. Thank you again for helping my students work on their communication skills!","fullyFundedDate":1753974127499,"projectUrl":"project/talk-touch-learn-sensory-bins-for-lan/9291922/","projectTitle":"Talk, Touch, Learn: Sensory Bins for Language Growth","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Nunez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9782472"},{"teacherId":6509438,"projectId":9443277,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your support of my new second music classroom. When my students walked in and saw their book bins neatly arranged with their names, their faces lit up with excitement. For many, it gave them a sense of ownership and pride in their learning, particularly as they could keep track of their materials. The pencil organizer has also brought much-needed structure to our supply area, helping students stay focused, prepared, and ready to work.\r\n\r\nAs a dual language school, we use Spanish and English for instruction, and the large lined Post-it posters have been a powerful tool for bridging the two languages, with English in my classroom and Spanish in my co-worker's room. We create anchor charts in both languages side by side, helping students make direct vocabulary and concept connections across content areas. For example, during our recent unit on text structure, we compared signal words and examples in Spanish and English, using colored markers to highlight similarities and differences.
