Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
NVCHS services female students in need. Many of our students come to New Village because they have had difficulty finding success at other schools. They face challenges such as teen motherhood, extreme poverty, and academic deficiencies. Despite these challenges, our students and staff work to foster a creative, safe, and hopeful environment where they receive individualized attention that will help them find success in school and in life.
NVCHS is the first all-girls charter school in Los Angeles and is on the campus of St.
Anne’s maternity home. About half of our students are pregnant or parenting and many have spent time in the foster care or juvenile justice system. We also have many students who are not parenting but have chosen our school because they wish to be in a small, girls-only environment.
Students at NVCHS range in age from 14 to 21 and many have faced some degree of trauma in their lives. They come to us looking for a safe, nurturing environment that will help them experience academic success in a way they have not been able to before. A growing number of our students go on to attend community college and other four year institutions.
My Project
NVCHS is in the process of becoming a Big Picture school (www.bigpicture.org) with a focus on real-world application of knowledge. In the near future, our students will spend some of their learning time at mentored internships in the community. We seek to motivate students to explore their personal interests as a means to become life long learners. As a part of this goal, a projector in the classroom would allow students to share videos and still photographs of their life and interests, as well as oral histories of the family immigration experiences. Although the projector can be used for many different projects, the theme for U.S. History is "What is an American?" We are currently recreating the immigrant experience of the turn of the 20th century which will be related to current immigration patterns and experiences, including their own.
Your support of this project will make a difference in how the students view their own lives and the lives of those around them.
Currently, our visuals are limited to posterboard presentations but the possibility of presentaing student stories and histories through video is exciting!
