What Do Statisticians And Economists In Harlem See?

My students need a document camera to review graphical data analysis (Statistics) and Industry and Firm Graphs (Economics) as well as student work.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A zip code should not determine a child's future. Everyone in our school in Harlem believes that our students have bright future's ahead of them. Our goal is to level the playing field for these very capable and deserving kids.

Next year I will be teaching one section of Advanced Placement Statistics and two sections of Advanced Placement Microeconomics to high school students in Harlem.

My students hope to earn college credit for these courses by scoring well enough on the AP Exams next May. All of these students are minorities and most live at or below the poverty level. Virtually all will be the first in their family to attend college. They are bright; they are capable and they deserve quality resources in their classrooms. These students are willing to work hard for their future; to have a fair chance, they need the same resources that their wealthier peers in the suburbs have access to.

My Project

Since both of these courses involve heavy use of graphics, having a document camera available will be extremely useful. We will be able to quickly analyze current data published in print (newspapers and magazines) as well as graphics from various other print resources. Furthermore, both of these courses are applied mathematics courses. Articulate written communication is an essential part of success in this course. The ability to describe ones' analysis, conclusions and decisions in writing is strictly graded on the AP Exams. To help us prepare adequately, it would be very useful to be able to review sample student submissions together to analyze them, critique them, grade them, and learn from them. Although we've been reading these aloud, many students would understand and follow the process better if they could see the actual written work for themselves. The document camera would make all this possible.

These students have opted to take a challenging college-level course while still in high school.

Every single one of them plans to attend college. They seek to enter college with some credits already accumulated and with proper study skills developed. Having a document camera available in class will help us to prepare properly and thoroughly for success on the Advanced Placement examinations.
