Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the teacher of a fourth grade title one classroom. My students work hard every day to achieve their academic goals. Recess is a time when we build community and encourage teamwork. I believe working together prepares students for real life experiences in the community and work place.
My students are fourth grade in a title one school.
They work daily to prepare for the EOG at the end of the year. They are tested regularly and have to stay focused in order to achieve their goals. Our school is a supportive, encouraging environment. We believe in promoting greatness and encouraging our students to be college and career ready. My children are sweet, loving and really do work hard every day to achieve their goals. My class is over 50% Hispanic and so English, for many of them, is the second language. They do not always get the support they need from home and so rely on their daily instruction at school to achieve high grades. Therefore their schooling is the main source of their education and is helping them to become sufficiently prepared for the 21st century American workplace. Many children in my school are from low income families and so school is an opportunity for respite from the challenges that their home lives present.
My Project
My students need games such as Clue, Tic Tac Toe and Charades for Kids. Everyday we get excited when it is time for recess. It is a time when we can unwind from learning, build relationships, learn to get along and work together; all the while having fun. This then transfers into the classroom because we can work in teams to complete our work, share resources and display character traits of kindness, cooperation and compassion to name but a few. Many of my children do not get to see these character traits in their home lives and so modeling it in school helps to promote positive behaviors and helps children to be better citizens in their environment. However when it rains we are stuck indoors and we have nothing to do. Our classroom has a couple of computers and we have paper to draw but after that we have no team games to play or resources to use. Growing up, board games helped me to learn to cooperate, share and follow directions. I know my students can learn so many valuable skills from having stimulating games to play in the classroom.
Relationships are key in being successful.
There is always a story behind the story. Sometimes school is the best part of a kid's day. I want my students to leave everyday with a positive view of school. I want my children to look back when they are older and think, I achieved my goals because someone believed in me and told me I could be great. Every moment in every school day is precious, including recess. You never know what the child can take away from a simple activity like a game.
