Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Where does my food come from? It's a basic question that most kids answer the same way: the store. This is a chance to expose inner city children to the wide open space of an organic goat farm.

My students are bright, curious and funny this year!

These are title-one students most of whom have never gone to a farm. Many of our students are learning English and would love to experience a working farm and dairy. These are third grade students who are usually 8 or 9 years old.

My Project

We are requesting a bus for 5 hours. An hour each way, plus three hours on the farm. During this time they will pet baby goats, and get to milk a goat. We then see how they make different kinds of cheeses and for a grand finale, the kids eat their goat cheese in an old hayloft. Kids learn the cycle of life, and the importance of sustainability. I have taken this trip with two classes, thanks to DonorsChoose.org donors, and the kids still talk about this trip the most. Nature changes them.

This is the only way my students will have this experience.

It costs a lot to fund a trip, but what you are buying is so important. It buys an experience, a memory, a shared moment. More than these things, these kids need to experience the world. This trip allows us to do that. They will feel, touch, smell, taste, and see a farm, in real life, not just on TV.
