What a HOOT Bringing Science to Life!

My students need these hands-on science materials to learn about owls and their importance in our natural environment and food chain. We will work in pairs to take apart the owl pellets.

This project expired on July 7, 2017.

My Students

My classroom is full of curious seven year old scientists and we would like to get a hands-on science experience! Many of my students do not have technology to explore wild animals around the world so I am trying to bring more animal science to them here at school.

We are having a great time hatching chicken eggs and taking care of a fish tank but would very much like more hands-on animal studies materials.

DUKE ENERGY will match gifts and we are so excited for more science in our school day! Won't you help us today?

My Project

My students are exploring the class fish tank as a freshwater habitat and have enjoyed caring for their three fish all school year. We recently added an egg incubator and have 40 chicken eggs on day 7 of their hatching cycle. Each morning we track the humidity and temperature inside our incubator in our science journals. The animal unit we are studying consists of comparing and contrasting animal habitats, life cycles, classification and characteristics that help them survive their predators. We are excited to explore owls that we hear in our town at night. These owl pellets will bring much needed hands on learning to my students and the request includes enough pellets for us to work in pairs with the classmates next door and learn science cooperatively. We would like to take apart owl pellets and see what the owl has hunted for food. We will use the bone charts to identify the bones we find and reconstruct the small animal skeletons found within the pellets! We also need books about pond life, insects, ecosystem diversity, and life in ecosystems.

Hands-on science exploration helps us develop our inquiry skills and explore the world around us in exciting ways!

At age 7 many of my students may not have reliable vehicles, money or access to science museums and hands on science learning if not done in the classroom. Many do not have technology at home that would allow them to explore wild animals outside of books. Please help us take apart owl pellets and study the tiny bones and figure out what these owls have been eating as we learn about their habitat and diet and hunting skills. The best part? DUKE ENERGY will match your gift today!
