Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have had their entire high school careers impacted by COVID. The juniors I work with missed out on the last half of 9th grade year, then they had an adjusted schedule and limited school year last year, and now as juniors are struggling with an ever changing schedule of distance learning and face to face learning that they want so badly. The sophomores and seniors have missed out on countless school experiences, classroom time, and face the same uncertainty and the ever changing world that COVID has brought.

These students are so resilient, and are trying their best to overcome the trials that have been tossed their way, but their mental health has taken a toll.

As counselors we have shifted our focus to meet the mental health needs of the students in this school and hope we can help them develop skills to help them throughout their lives as they undoubtedly will face many more challenges in the future.

My Project

These materials will be added to the counseling office to create a wellness room. We have a few materials already but this will add activities for students when they need to take a mental health break. We have also included music activities for students to participate in music workshops to find healing.

Students have access to the wellness room to spend 10 -15 minutes to calm down and have a mental health break.

These activities include coloring, fidget toys, zen sand gardens, and mediation cards. The musical instruments will be used for music workshops for students who want to find healing through music.
