My Students

A day in the life of my students involves them exploring a range of academic topics in a small group setting. Our small classroom is like a family. I teach in a small group setting that typically involves groups of two students at a time. These small groups allow me to teach each student in a more individualized way.

My students are working on academics between 1 and 2 years below their grade level but struggle most with social behavior and how to interact with those around them.

Social interaction is an area of weakness for my students which is why they are in my classroom and not in their home school at this time.

All of my students come from various school districts and the ultimate goal is to get them back there as soon as possible. Most of my student when stressed or upset will have "meltdowns". Our biggest job is to get the students to accept and understand why they are stressed and upset and getting them to not "meltdown" in the process.

My Project

These sensory items will allow my students to take charge of their sensory needs and make the choices that work best for them. My students have sensory needs through out the day and require frequent breaks to fulfill these needs. By creating a dedicated area in my classroom for my students to utilize sensory items it helps them fulfill their own needs for sensory input. Currently my students are choosing sensory choices such as sand box, drawing, and play-doh. These items will give them more variety in their sensory choices. Making sure students’ sensory needs are fulfilled is integral to their education. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given time to fulfill sensory needs.

My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive when sensory breaks are given.

The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional sensory choices. The sensory kit will allow student sensory input in a variety of ways. These sensory items can also be used to calm a student in crisis.

I have seen how more sensory choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor.
