Welcoming Students Back by Being Welcoming to All Students

Help me give my students a visually stimulating workspace to enhance their learning.

Mrs. Day Asheville High School
Asheville, NC Grades 9-12

My Students

My school community is diverse and welcomes people from all walks of life. The alternative learning program where I work is unique in many ways, including its physical setting. Within one school building, there exist two high schools and an alternative program. After years of unfortunate circumstances, which have forced the alternative program to relocate multiple times, we are attempting to make a semi-temporary space feel like a welcoming learning environment.

The students we serve are the students who have faced the most obstacles in obtaining their education.

The numerous hurdles outside of the school building have placed these students at significant risk of dropping out of high school. The majority of our student population is BlPOC and students living in poverty. To face so much in life at such a young age is harrowing. We believe our students deserve to learn in a space that is conducive to relieving the stress they face outside of our walls and allows them to focus on the learning at hand.

Research tells us that bright colors, motivational and educational visuals, and positive imagery that reflects the students' own experiences have a positive impact on student learning and overall sense of well-being.

My Project

Our students are returning to the school building for the first time since March 13, 2020. These materials will help us prepare a welcoming space for all students as many of them enter our space for the first time. Students will feel more relaxed because we can communicate our expectations and instructions clearly using the whiteboard easel. They will be able to focus on their learning during this time of transition back to face-to-face instruction after more than a year of remote learning.

The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card and the posters will help us set up bulletin boards and wall decor that acknowledges the student's experiences over the past year and makes them feel represented within our walls.

We want our students to know how much we appreciate their resiliency and hard work.

Staring at the same bare walls every day is not conducive to learning. We want our students to feel inspired and uplifted by the visual aesthetic of their classrooms. The learning outcomes we expect are higher daily attendance rates, improved social-emotional well-being, and the ability for students to focus more on their academic course work in a space that feels inviting to them.
