Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in our school are culturally diverse. They work hard and are eager to learn. More than half of them come from low-income families. We have. many students of special needs as well as many that are recent immigrants. Together they speak over 20 different languages. In addition, they all have different learning abilities and learning styles. They are energetic and curious about learning.

My Project

The human brain is designed to produce and regulate responses to the body’s sensory experiences — those things we touch, see, smell, taste and hear. This link between the brain and our behavior is called “sensory integration.” For most people, this is a normal and typically overlooked part of their daily experience. However, for many of our students including individuals with autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, as well as individuals with a variety of developmental challenges in the area of communication, movement. balance, and social skills, the way the brain processes these experiences can be a major source of distress and discomfort. These students are prone to meltdowns, tantrums, or negative attempts at self-soothing. An excellent way to treat and help overcome sensory problems is the use of a sensory room. These “safe” spaces are designed to provide a place for individuals with sensory issues to decompress and confront a variety of sensory issues in a way that will ultimately help them learn to cope with seemingly normal experiences.

A sensory room in our school will help our many special needs students cope with their various sensory issues and aid them in focusing and excelling in academic work in their classroom.

We will use our sensory room to provide a physical and mental stimulus for our students with physical disabilities, learning delays, behavioral issues, developmental delays, and sensory impairments. For our students with physical disabilities, interaction with sensory stimuli will help them to develop their sight, sound, touch and hearing, as well as encouraging independence. It will enable our school to accommodate all our special needs students by providing them with a sensory environment.
