Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year in second grade, we will be using our **I Can Read** book sets to practice and strengthen

our reading skills in a way that feels meaningful,

engaging, and fun!

These wonderful books, including beloved favorites such as **Amelia Bedelia** and **Frog and Toad**, give children the opportunity to read stories that are entertaining while building confidence as independent readers.

As we read, we will practice important reading skills such as **reading fluently, using context clues, understanding vocabulary, retelling and summarizing, identifying characters and setting, making predictions, and thinking about the lessons and messages within a story**. We will also talk about what good readers do when they come to a word or part of a story that is challenging. Instead of simply giving up, we will learn to use the strategies we have been practicing to work through it.

Most importantly, I want my students to discover that **reading is something to enjoy—not just something we do for a grade**. Books like *Amelia Bedelia* and *Frog and Toad* invite children to laugh, wonder, make connections, and see themselves as readers. My hope is that these books will help our second graders become stronger readers while also helping them develop a genuine love of books and stories.

Through our daily reading practice, we will celebrate progress, encourage one another, and remember that every reader grows at a different pace. **Our goal is not simply to read more words, but to become thoughtful, confident, and joyful readers.**
