Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students work hard. They take a full course load at my Title 1 high school in East Oakland, with the majority simultaneously taking college classes and engaging in internships outside of school. Additionally, many of my students work part-to-full time jobs to support their families. The majority of my students are Latino and African-American, and 99.6% receive free and reduced lunch.

My students are creative, driven, and energetic learners, but they have many barriers between them and their education.

Because of their many outside responsibilities, the financial instability in our district, and the barriers created by system racism and classism, It's easy for them to get overwhelmed and fall behind. In my classroom, I seek ways to help students take ownership of their learning and strive to help them develop a sense of agency in their lives and communities.

My Project

My students are a diverse group of readers: some read at a 2nd grade level, others at a college level. While I have a small class library, I and my students want to improve it.

My students have requested a range of books that reflect their reading levels, identities, and interests.

Their suggestions range from novels to comics to kids' adventure books. I've seen, again and again, how students choosing their own books creates enthusiastic and engaged readers: by letting students having a say in building our class library, I hope that will become even more invested in building their identities as readers.
