We Need to Calm Down!

Help me give my students tools to use to calm their overwhelmed minds.

My Students

My students come to me to learn basic language arts, math, science, social skills, and life skills. My students have severe delays including Autism, Down Syndrome, and health impairments that impede their progress in the general curriculum.

My students are delayed learners.

Despite their disabilities my students are truly rock stars! I love how happy they are to come to school. The come to school eager to learn and continually inspire me. One student, though in a wheelchair, participates fully in Adaptive P.E. by getting on the floor and crawling through the set obstacle course. I watch them overcome so much while remaining happy and unfazed by what ever challenges they may face.

My Project

I want to define a space in my life skills classroom where students may go to take a break and satisfy sensory needs. I want to hang a canopy in the corner of my room to define that space. I will fill the space with the tools I have chosen. These tools will be a great resource for my students to work out their sensory needs.

Many of my life skills students are diagnosed with Autism, and that comes with overwhelming sensory issues.

When my students get overwhelmed they need a place that is calming and offers them opportunities to meet their sensory needs, like plunging their hands in a box of beads, watching things move in a sensory tube, and just stopping to feel the quiet and calm of a designated sensory "room".

This creates serenity in a noisy and active classroom.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
