Having a rug to gather my students for group instruction would be perfect. Having a colored square to designate each student's area would help my Life Skills class to be more focused. Sitting in a chair at a table all day causes boredom and loss of attention. The large carpet will be placed in the front of the classroom and used as a gathering place during calendar time, direct instruction before a project, and end-of-day review would take place "on the carpet". Changing things up and transitioning from table to rug (and back) throughout the day will encourage a sense of community, help decrease behaviors, and increase focus.
