We Need These Books, Please!

Help me give my students new fiction and nonfiction books that they have specifically requested for our media center shelves to show them that their voice matters and is heard in our media center.

My Project

In our school's media center, we have a clipboard hanging on our circulation desk with a running list titled "Books We Need." Readers can add the titles of books they want to us to add to our media center collection to the list along with their names. Not surprisingly, our most frequent media center visitors are also the most frequent contributors to the list. Their names appear multiple times and the list is truly informed by their special interests. I also make notes as I listen to readers and see trends in books checked out so I can make sure that we have enough to meet reader needs and help them grow.

This project will give our readers the books they're asking for and show them that their voice is valued and included when making decisions about books for our media center.

When readers are able to choose materials that interest them, they're more likely to read, which helps them to grow as readers and thinkers.

From the list of titles, you can see that we're honoring a wide range of reader interests from favorite authors and the next books in favorite series to axolotls and corny jokes.
