All of the students I teach are special needs children. Their age places them in a middle school setting; however, they all function on a much lower grade level. Almost all of my students live a guarded life at home and at school. Some of my students are classified as intellectually delayed and function well behind their age/grade level, some have emotional disturbance and need extra support in the classroom.
My students need to learn how to have fun just like everyone else does and not be fearful of who is watching them.
This is the first school year that we were able to teach to the student and not to the state's needs. The students' abilities are more important than providing data to the state. This school year we taught in a less conventional way, to get life skills across to them. We have pet-assisted learning animals in the classroom, a site therapy dog, hygiene skills, and hands-on learning and community-based projects along a program to combat childhood obesity. All skills our students need to learn how to do for themselves.
My Project
We are a Title I public school in Brooklyn with a wide variety of students of various skill levels.
Our students are hard working and in need of so many items to learn daily skills with.
Our goal is to not only teach life skills to our students, but we give them a window into a career in the work world. All of our students are classified as students with special needs. Hands-on work skills are one area where they excel because it is a hands-on practice while you learn class.
A washer and dryer will enable students to wash their clothes, learn to use the machine and learn the skill of folding. We will be requesting clothes from homes, we will be washing school t-shirts and helping out with some of our students who are currently without a home, to be able to wash their own clothing.
The impact of having a machine and dryer will make on our students will be tremendous. We will be able to do this in house instead of losing instruction time going out to the local laundry mat to practice this skill with our students.
