We began using them right away to support lessons focused on communication, literacy, and daily living skills. For example, during a recent activity, students used fine-motor manipulatives and picture supports to follow multi-step directions and practice requesting items, which helped build both confidence and independence.\r\n\r\nThese resources have already made a difference by helping each student stay engaged and motivated during instruction. They create more opportunities for hands-on learning and positive interactions, which are so important in our special education setting.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue using these tools to support social-emotional learning and functional communication throughout the school day — from morning meetings to academic centers. By being able toss a foam speaker to a students who is shy to start out, helps ease their fear and allows for their voice to be heard without adults asking many times to say it again. My school now has more tools for our students to use. Coordination is such a difficult task for many of our students. Now we are better equipped as a school to help guide out student's abilities. We will be able to run stations during PE time slot with one of the stations being active movement. This will help with gross motor skills and many of our student's needs. \r\n\r\nThis is an advantage to have at the ready stationary bikes to have and use as one of our stations in gym. We were able to sort items that belong in the refrigerator vs. the freezer and problem solve as they stocked the refrigerator/freezer after shopping. Because we have this wonderful opportunity of having a refrigerator in our classroom we can have exciting and educational shopping experiences as well. We are learning to ask for the location of different items in the store as well as pushing a shopping cart, loading things onto the conveyor belt and learning how to be a polite customer.
