We Need a Few More Fiddles!

My students need 5 violin outfits and 3 violin shoulder rests to continue in the school Fiddle Club Program for at risk students.

My Students

Can you imagine the joy in learning to play a musical instrument like a fiddle when your family can't afford to purchase an instrument or pay for lessons? Well, that is happening for some students at this school and it is providing so much enjoyment, self-esteem boost, and positive experiences.

The majority of students at my school are from very low income families.

We are located in a rural part of NC. Many of the families are struggling just to make ends meet. Many of the children are being raised by relatives and some are in foster care, due to parental problems. The music program, which provides one general music class per week per child, is all the music each child routinely gets. This afterschool Fiddle Club provides such a boost for the students. They look forward to the weekly meetings and eagerly learn new tunes. They are taught by ear and are so proud when they can perform their tunes at school and community events. Some of the students have been in the program for several years and are outgrowing their instruments. They need larger sizes and we want to provide these so that they can continue learning.

My Project

About 5 years ago, I started the Fiddle Club at the school with a Donors Choose grant. I wanted to pass along the old Appalachian fiddle tunes that are part of the heritage of these students. I started with 5 violins and the program has now grown to about 20 instruments. Over the past 5 years, many students have participated in the Fiddle Club and have had a wonderful musical experience. The children who are in the program are from at-risk families and would never have this opportunity otherwise. This has opened up a whole new musical world to many students. As part of the program, the students perform in the community, attend local fiddler's conventions and spread the word about music. It's so rewarding to be walking around at a music event such as a fiddler's convention and have the students recognize a tune they hear that has been passed down for hundreds of years that they would never had known without having the Fiddle Club experience.

I can't adequately explain the impact this program has had on these students who have not had many cultural opportunities in their lives.

This has opened up a world of music and cultural heritage for them that is life-changing. Please help us to get additional instruments so that this program can continue to be successful.
