Help me give my students a library of Social and Emotional books to help them grow and characters they can connect with during our daily social emotional learning period, all while incorporating our reading and writing standards.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school in sunny Florida. This year presents many new challenges in part due to the pandemic. Many of my young students are just learning to sit, share, take turns, and deal with their feelings. Other factors that impact my students are trauma and homelessness. Many of my students have had minimal experiences outside the home, interacting with others, and learning how to identify and regulate their emotions. I recognize that each of my students brings something beautiful and unique to the classroom family. My goal is to help them recognize that.
My Project
By using books that engage kids, I can help support my students on the various feelings they have and acceptable coping strategies when they experience them. I often refer to Maslow over Bloom (students physical and emotional needs must be met before we can expect them to read and write.) It is my goal that by sharing books with characters my kiddos can relate to, they will learn to identify their feelings so they can begin to learn to self-regulate their emotions. Making connections to characters who may have the same feelings validates that it is "okay." Using read alouds that support Social Emotional Growth allows me the opportunity to meet Florida's Best Standards in Reading and Writing, while also meeting them where they are emotionally. The few manipulative items will be used in the creation of my "think it through" area where students can choose to take a break.
