Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a great group of Kindergarteners who are ready to learn. They are troopers when it comes to participating in our new "all day" kindergarten program.
My students are thirsty for knowledge and they have their own goals they want to achieve.
Unfortunately, our school is located in an area that has an economic challenge that parents and students face every day. Approximately 95% of our students are on free or reduced price lunch. For many, English is their second language, and many do not have technology in their homes. Our school will soon implement the Leader In Me program which helps students see their own greatness in themselves. My students will become the leaders of tomorrow...today!
My Project
Sight words are very important for students in Kindergarten to master because sight words account for up to 75% of the words used in beginning childrens' printed material. A variety of Sight Word activities will help promote my students' confidence in recognizing their sight words. Knowing their sight words will help them become good readers and good writers.
Sight words help students build a foundation for reading comprehension and fluency.
The flashcards will be placed on the pocket chart for daily review as well as a resource to use when they are writing. The books will help students find and use sight words in reading books. The books are simple sentences and students will feel successful being able to apply and read the sentences. At the same time, many other skills are being practiced such as reading left to right, using picture clues, and building fluency.
