This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a very diverse group, each with their own talents, skills, interests, and personalities. They are developing the life and career skills necessary to lead successful and productive lives. They are driven to become as productive as possible. They are able to gain knowledge through classroom academics that are designed to incorporate functional and transition-oriented content into their daily lives.
In addition, they are able to gain experiences through community-based activities that allow them to learn and practice employment skills in a real-life setting.
These experiences are crucial for students to connect with the content, and to internalize the knowledge they have gained. There are community service projects as well as micro-enterprise projects that they are able to ownership in.
My Project
The concept behind this project is to provide a micro-enterprise opportunity for the students in my program. They would be responsible for setting up and managing a small business in the school building, which is such a fantastic way for them to learn and internalize new skills! They would be able to order and maintain an ongoing inventory. The students would need to market and advertise their business in order to encourage sales.
The students would be able to learn how to properly clean and maintain the coffee makers, toaster oven, blender, and all related equipment and work-space.
They will be able to transfer these skills into a wide-range of additional educational and career opportunities as they move forward. The profits generated will be reinvested into the business, with any surplus going into supporting other community and service-based opportunities for the students.
