Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students want to read independently about things that interest them! Sadly, most of my students have never had this experience because of reading disabilities! We need more ways to integrate technology with reading into our classroom so they can access material that motivates them to learn.
We are an inner city school located in Boston proper.
The school goes from K-5 with three special needs classroom. Every student in the school receives free lunch. The school has no library and the public library is too far away for us to walk. My students are unable to go to the library after school because most of their parents are working two jobs and are not able to bring them. I have 12 students in my classroom. Each student has a specific learning or emotional disability. I teach both fourth and fifth grade together. I must teach both curriculum. Eight of my 12 students are English language learners. Most are reading independently on a first grade level. All my students are curious and love to be read to.
My Project
Because I have to teach two curriculum, my classroom is set up in centers. I have the computer center, (with four computers), the library, Wilson reading center, and my assistant runs a center. With an IPad my students will be able to read independently grade level text and practice literacy skills. The use of this technology in our classroom will open up a world of endless possibilities for my students.
I use the learning centers in which students are occupied with phonics, independent reading, spelling, sentence building, comprehension and other literacy activities.
By using this type of technology, each child will have an opportunity to read grade level text everyday. With technology there is no reason why someone with a learning disability can not be successful.
