This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My Little Heroes! This is my first year teaching. I am teaching first grade in a Title I school. My first graders are so enthusiastic about life, nature, and learning! We have a superhero theme in our room and try to center everything around that and remembering that we are Super Talented and Super Special in many different ways! I have 21 students from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and walks of life, but no matter what, when we walk into our school, we are a family!
Of these 21 Super Heroes, two are English Learners, three receive Speech Services, two are Gifted, and ten receive extra academic assistance outside of the classroom, all at various times.
Even with all of our differences, everyone is treated equally and Super helpful when they see someone is in need of extra help or just a friend.
My Project
My classroom is full of hands-on learners who really like science and animals. I realized this a few weeks in when we started our Reading lessons on pets, and they began to ask for a class pet. Learned even further when they began to request to watch Wild Kratts for our afternoon Science lessons.
Every afternoon we do a science lesson, whether using Wild Kratts or a book on animals that someone has chosen for that day.
During the first few months of school, I gave them the assignment of listing different possible classroom pets. Over break, I got our new rabbit, named Charlie, from a family that was moving and could not keep him!
