Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is an inquisitive, explorative, caring bunch of rascals. These students have sweet hearts and good brains, devoting every day to get just a little bit better, working through difficult situations, finding their voice in academics and relationships. There is a steady buzz of movement and voices. Continual high energy is focused into goal-oriented tasks and projects.
My mission is that every student leaves my classroom knowing they have VALUE and the ability to be great CHANGE-MAKERS in their community.
In an ever-changing world full of trials and upsets, children must learn to love themselves and love others. “Ms. R, yesterday she said in circle time she was lonely so today we played together and it was really fun!” “My brain hurts from so much math but my heart is happy because it’s getting easier.” “I just used my growth mindset and I tried again! Look!”
Our scholars are largely underserved, working hard to bridge the opportunity gap. They are aware of the obstacles they already face, and continue to teach me what it looks like to live a life of hope and joy. I am a better person for their eager minds and open hearts. Look out world!
My Project
Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, I started flexible seating this year. I have spent a considerable amount of time researching the concept, and the results in my second grade classroom are powerful.
Flexible seating is empowering my students to take control of their education.
Allowing students to move in their seats and find their comfort spots allows academics to be at the forefront of their concentration. Our two Kore Wobble Chairs are the classroom favorite, and an addition of two more will be greatly appreciated. The swivel chairs allow movement at a height and ease which works perfectly with the tables at the school. Fidget toys would be a great benefit to help certain students concentrate on the task at hand (without destroying classroom tools on accident.
The social-emotional climate is greatly benefitted by this seating as well. Students have developed a caring, sharing mentality. I am in awe watching students encourage each other, move around the room freely to help each other, and take great pride in their space. To continue encouraging this calm and productive environment, I hope to use an oil diffuser with lavender to keep the room a relaxing and mindful environment.
