Flexible seating options would allow my second grade students the ability to focus their bodies and brains to the task at hand. While students express a joy in learning and growing their brains, hours of sitting upright and right in desks is not a conducive structure to the freedom and creativity kids need. Instead, physical activity is directly linked to higher academic performance. This activity will be aided through stability balls, stadium seating for students who prefer to work on the floor, and wobble stools. Independence and ownership in seating options empowers student choice, community, and collaboration. These young change-makers must be given the opportunity to make strategic choices in their own learning from an early age. Many of the students in my room must have freedom in movement in order to participate in class work. Every minute is valuable in the classroom setting, and using movement-oriented seating options will allow students the resources they need to produce the best work possible.
