My students need playground equipment such as 3 soccer balls, 3 footballs, 3 baseballs, 3 bats, and a set of bases and for recess and Fun Friday this year.
If you asked a child what their favorite part of the school day, many would say recess. That is not necessarily the case in the fifth grade classes at my school. Given the state of our playground equipment, many students have taken to sitting at recess instead of playing.
My students include approximately 80 fifth graders at a rural mountain school in the southern portion of the United States.
The children attend a public elementary school that is known for achieving academic success despite the growing population of disadvantaged students!
The students work hard and strive to be their personal best. The children are also eager to please, kind hearted, and willing to work hard. We are asking for supplies for recess so that the students can enjoy themselves during their free time as well as stay healthy. The students work hard during class and deserve to play hard too!
My Project
Receiving these new recess supplies will enhance students experience at recess and allow more students to be active at recess. Recently students has taken to sitting down at recess and we want them to get up and play!
Often we have one ball at recess, unless a child brings his/her own equipment from home. One ball is not enough for 80 students. The more equipment we have, the more students can be involved. We have also requested a variety of balls/equipment so students can participate in an activity of his/her choice. Having such a variety of equipment will allow students to experiment with a variety of sports in a safe setting which could lead them to participating on a higher level. Our goal is not only to allow the students to have fun, but the set them up for a healthy lifestyle.
Providing my students with new recess equipment will greatly increase their physical activity and involvement at recess.
Ultimately this will make recess more fun while creating a healthier generation!
