I work at a targeted Title 1 public K-5 school (approximately 40% receive free/reduced lunch) in rural western North Carolina. Despite some socioeconomic disadvantages, we are routinely recognized for our high academic achievement. Last year we were recognized as B school narrowing missing attaining A+ status which we had achieved for the previous four years with our students showing high growth. I teach fifth grade math to approximately 100 students ranging in age from 10 - 12 years old. The students are kind, hard working, and eager to learn. My students are also leaders at my school - serving as Safety Patrol members assisting students and staff while additional students run a school store once a week.
