Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager, enthusiastic, hard-working, and creative. Most of them speak a language other than English at home and are learning English at school. More than 90% qualify for free lunch because of their low socioeconomic status. My goal is to provide my students with rich educational experiences that support them as they learn how to be great friends, while also learning literacy and writing skills.
Listening to these great stories, acting them out, and reflecting in their journals will help my students build empathy and self care skills.

My Project
Social emotional learning books are the MOST popular books in my classroom library. This project expands my collection and purchases journals and crayons so the students can write and draw about their own emotions and friendships. After reading the story in our community circle, I will have students act out the story, discuss how the stories apply to their lives. I will also link the books to our Social Emotional Learning curriculum which teaches students about "tools" like breathing, listening, saying please and thank you, that help them solve problems with their friends.
Understanding emotions and how emotions impact our actions with friends is so interesting and engaging for my students.
They really want to be good friends, so the more I can support their understanding of how to stand up for themselves, while also being kind to their classmates is very meaningful for them.
