This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music." -Billy Joel We are starting a homeroom guitar class as a way to assist students with positive self-expression.

Many of our students come from low economic or struggling families.

A large portion of them use negative behavior to gain attention. However, it is always surprising to see much of that soften once they realize that we, as teachers, are in their corner. We also have students that come from strong, stable homes and provide a tone of confidence, leadership, and success. As most students this age, ours are trying to find an acceptable way of expressing themselves in society and to cope appropriately with all the stress in their lives.

My Project

The specific activity I will engage is teaching basic guitar. Music has been proven to teach critical thinking, creativity and reflection. Music also provides opportunities for students to solve problems that require higher level thinking skills. Even though there are many other ways music impacts a students learning, these two alone would make our students much more successful in the academic classroom.

Please consider this a great opportunity for our students to develop a love of learning a skill that will transfer from playing the guitar to the skill of learning the academic principles they need for success in the classroom.
