This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I first mentioned the word "opera" to my students at the beginning of this school year, they all looked at me as if I was speaking in a different language. At that moment, I knew that this was the first time they had ever heard that word.

My students are like little sponges in the classroom; they love learning.

They are sweet, funny, curious, and kind. They are always excited to try something new. And they happen to live in a high-poverty neighborhood, attend a Title I public elementary school, and qualify for free lunch. Given their socioeconomic status, my students only experience the arts through school. Many of their parents work long hours and are focused more on basic survival than on cultural and artistic enrichment. Now with cuts to educational funding, our school has even less support to offer art programs to its students. As my students' primary classroom teacher, I feel responsible and committed to offer them the best and most well-rounded education I can offer. I believe a true education includes more than just the basics; art is fundamental towards bringing each student's learning to life.

My Project

This year I had the opportunity to attend a training called "Creating an Original Opera," an organization devoted to integrating opera into curriculum. This training changed my life. I witnessed the power of art and creativity to bring out qualities, skills, and talents in students that might otherwise remain hidden. Inspired by the training, I have worked hard this year to bring the program to my classroom. Together, my group of 30 second-graders and I are in the process of creating an original opera from scratch, with a theme, thesis, and all of the roles you would find in a real opera company. We have actors, musicians, costume designers, a stage manager, and more. Our libretto is nearly complete, and the musicians are working nonstop to compose the music. One critical missing piece for our production is technology: we need one digital photo camera and one video camera for our historians and public relations to document and advertise our creation to the world.

Art truly changes lives.

I am touched each day to see my students blossom as they work outside of the usual classroom structures to create an original opera together. How sad it would be if their efforts and process were left undocumented!
