Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of students in our school are dis-engaged students from low-income, urban families. Many of them have had some sort of trauma or stress in their lives which impact their ability to learn or stay motivated through the challenges of school and life in order to prepare for college and a successful future.
We serve at risk urban high school students from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
The students in my classes range in abilities. They make me smile every day with stories from their lives, and they inspire me with their ideas and creativity!
My Project
All my students get excited when they are able to work with new art materials that are unfamiliar to them. They are more engaged in learning more deeply about a topic while learning new skills. They have seen mosaic art and gotten very excited about it! I'd like to be able to provide them with pre-cut mosaic tiles and glass, grout and boards for them to be able to explore their personal cultural heritage further through the subject matter that they will choose to depict through mosaic art.
My students represent a variety of cultural backgrounds which can be shared with one another through mosaic art - hence, we are a cultural mosaic!
Each artist will research images that symbolize something of significance to them and their cultural heritage, or a culture that they feel drawn to. They will create a drawing which will then be turned into a mosaic piece of art.
Oftentimes as a teacher I am finding new things to do with the same standard materials. I know my students would get very excited about an opportunity to work with something new within my Cultural Arts and Crafts class!
