This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

It’s a Wednesday afternoon, and you feel like giving up. Again. Everything sucks, and what’s the point even? This is the internal monologue of so many of my students. Low income students of color are coping with so many stressors. From struggling in classes, to hustling to meet basic needs, to juggling school and their responsibilities outside of school, many of my students never seem to catch a break. It's so important for schools to provide opportunities for students to find joy, play, wonder, and creativity. This is why I am asking for a button-maker, these canvases, acrylic paint, paint markers, and more!

Please help me provide cute arts and crafts projects for my class- I want my students to experience more joy, more fun, and more community!

My students struggle to find motivation to come to school, or don't find much they enjoy about their classes. Knowing that there will be fun projects to make and share with friends and family gives students another reason to come to school, and to engage in community. The students have been really wanting the paint by number kits and stained glass painting kits. Some of my students carry so much stress, and the idea of just painting freely feels so much harder to them than painting a canvas with a pre-printed image. For art to relieve their stress, we need options! Students have been asking for modelling clay and acrylic paint markers for weeks now.

Mostly, I teach English and Ethnic Studies at an urban high school that primarily serves low-income students of color, but I also teach an elective arts and crafts class, and get to share the magic of crafting with my students.
