Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students reside in the downtown Los Angeles area. Our middle school has expanded now to include a new high school serving 9th and 10th graders and will grow to serve a full 9-12th grade high school program.
This project will directly serve 200 students at our campus, with 10-15 student leaders overseeing implementation and accountability for our developing program.
Our student demographic population represents a culturally diverse group with about 45% of students identifying as Latino, 45% identifying as Korean-American, 5% identifying as African-American, and the remaining 5% identifying as other Asian American. Over 80% of our students qualify for Free or Reduced lunch.
My Project
My students are practicing watercolor painting and mindfulness. Students will use watercolor paints, brushes, and paper to practice: color blending techniques, and salt/alcohol effects on watercolor paint. We look to nature for much of our inspiration, with an emphasis on studying landscapes and National Parks as the subject.
The goal of this unit is to help students find more beauty in the world around them, and for students to build positive outlets, such as watercolor painting, as a tool for dealing with stress.
Mindfulness watercoloring improves the quality of life for my students in the classroom, and in the outside world.
