Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kids are special because they belong to me. Once they entered my class, they take over my heart. My heart is filled with sweet, artistic, loud, energetic, kind, and at times a bit dramatic third graders.

Sometimes, it's hard to get my kids excited to learn when they come to school sad, hungry, or disappointed.

My kids worry about adult-level life problems. Instead of being exposed to trips to the zoo or a baseball game, some of my kids wonder if they have a place to live, food to eat, or if they have clothes that are clean and fit.

My Project

I have students that come to school freezing, without beanies or gloves, just a jacket. My classroom is a portable classroom located at the far end of the campus.

My students are in desperate need of gloves and beanies so that they can keep warm.

One day I noticed as I walked my class to the restroom, the majority of my students were without gloves and beanies. Ever since we got back from winter break 12 of my 53 students were out due to Covid. I have to do something to at least prevent other illnesses like the flu. Keeping my students heads and hands warm on campus is one step to keep my kids safe and healthy.

Students do lose their beanies and gloves, but teaching them the responsibility of keeps us safe, and it will teach my students to understand that we are also keeping our loved ones and classmates safe. I will remind them to keep their gloves and beanies in their backpacks when they get home. Healthy students will increase attendance and student learning.
