My Students

It is probably hard to remember how old you were before you learned to read... maybe 5, 6 years old. I work with students up to 5th grade who still struggle to read. Rather than reading chapter books with their peers many are still learning letter sounds. I hope to give them the gift of literacy.

We are a small school in Maine that services children in pre-k through 5th grade.

Our area of the state is poor and work is scarce. Many of our industries have died out leaving people scrambling to make ends meet. Many of the families I work with struggle with basic necessities. I have students with no books in their homes; so I have to provide a literature rich environment. Our school works so hard to provide so many things to students, including food and clothing. This year we also gave countless books to families, many paid for out of our own pockets as teachers.

My Project

Access to as many books as possible is critical to my students' success in reading! Leveled sets allow students to work in teams which build a great sense of classroom community. The students can read aloud together which builds confidence and fluency. Being part of a group is very important to my students, many of whom have troubled home lives. When we have nothing else, we have each other!

Giving children the gift of literacy is vitally important to me.

Without the ability to read my students cannot succeed in school or in life. The most power a person can possess is the power to read and understand language. It impacts all curriculum areas and day-to-day life experiences. This gift will give hope to children who often have little of it. Thank you for thinking of us!
