My students need colored pencils and highlighters to color-code their notes and to identify patterns in writing. Research has proven that the use of color enables students to return information for a longer amount of time.

My Students

My students are excited and motivated to learn, especially when given the opportunity to create projects in color. They love to highlight and color important information when analyzing their own writing, learning new material, as well as studying and reviewing for a test.

Research has proven that students remember information longer when it is in color.

This project would increase student success by creating opportunities for students "to create in color." It would be extremely beneficial to have a class set of colored pencils and highlighters so that each students could have his/her own pack of coloring utensils during class.

My Project

Students use color-coding as a note-taking strategy and study strategy within my classroom. For over a decade, I have found students who use color within their notes and assignments score significantly higher on their unit tests than students who do not use color. However, this year we are running low on supplies and are in need of more coloring utensils.

Specifically, students will use highlighters to color-code the different components of the RACES writing strategy when responding to constructed response questions in preparation for NC state tests; with the use of highlighters, students are more engaged in the learning process and can easily SEE if they are missing a component of the RACES writing strategy.

Highlighters and colored pencils are not only used for students to analyze their paragraph construction, but also to analyze individual sentence construction. (For examples, students are asked to color-code each part of speech a different color within the sentences they write. They quickly begin to identify which parts of speech that are most readily used and the significance of nouns, pronouns, and verbs in the construction of complete sentences.) Highlighters and colored pencils allow students to SEE what they are missing in their writing.

In sum, COLOR is a useful, fun, engaging, and research-based strategy that is effective in the classroom. Please join me in helping provide the tools necessary for my students to excel in their learning.
