When reading a piece of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, students will color-code literary devices (according to a predetermined legend). This will enable students to see which literary elements are appearing most often in a text, which then spurs class discussion focused on the author's purpose/intent for incorporating figurative language, imagery, etc. Learning takes place more often in an environment in which students are highly engaged and motivated; this activity inspires high school students to use coloring as an active reading strategy. When provided these necessary supplies, students are also able to analyze sentence structure, identify parts of speech, and determine subject-verb agreement. The colored pencils could be used to analyze literature, as well as student writing. A win-win situation!
