Walking to the Beat

My Project

We have a mentoring program with 18 girls 11 - 14 years old. One of the main topics we discuss is body image and maintaining healthy routines. Our students discuss emotional, social, communication, self awareness, conflict resolution, and etiquette each week to grow as young ladies. One main objective of the mentoring program is mindfulness. We pause to listen to music, read, journal, whisper talk, sing, dance, or just be still. Our girls reflect growth each week.

Our project is to try and incorporate 'walk and talk' into our program.

Students expressed sitting all day in class, our program can help them continue fostering positive relationships while actively moving their bodies. Our students are passionate about maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and ankle weights while walking will help them further their body image discussions. The jersey's will help bring unity while engaging in the program. Although seasons change, the sound of a beat will help encourage the girls to still walk the hallways when outdoor trails are unavailable.

After walking, who would not want a healthy snack. Teaching the students about healthy choices 'now' are key to helping them continue to make life long decisions.
