My Project

Our pre-k students benefit from visuals such as procedures in the classroom and instructions for 'how-to' assignments and projects. Because our young students can not read at this point, materials and centers are labeled with pictures. We also use their photos to display their work and label their personal supplies. In a classroom with a high percentage of EL students, the benefits go way beyond these basic reasons. Visual cues have been a proven method to help promote language and communication. Many educators believe the environment is the third teacher (after parents or guardians and the classroom teacher). This means that the learning environment is a space to show wonder, curiosity, ideas, values, pictures, stories, etc., that are being told on a daily basis in the school setting. It is a setting designed to be not only functional but also beautiful and reflective of the child’s learning.

Visual cues help students function independently and photos ensure that each student is being seen so they feel valued in our classroom.

I have been teaching in the public education system for 30 years, but this is my second year to teach in a pre-kindergarten classroom. Colored ink would really help me in building a collection of labels, procedural instructions and visual cues as well as posting photos of my sweet students in a variety of places. Your donation to this project would be greatly appreciated and would play an important part of empowering children so that they can see themselves as important, heard, capable and competent.
