Visualizing Science In the Real World

My students need a laptop computer to share lab data, real-world observations, presentations, and results with their peers on our interactive SmartBoard.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of our current students are becoming proficient in the use of technology at a rate hard to match in the classroom. It is important that we provide opportunities for students to use various technologies to help in their learning.

The students impacted by this project are high school students in science and pre-engineering classes.

This is a suburban Title I school. Many of the students are under-represented minority based on ethnic or socio-economic background. Most of them are familiar with technology but have limited access in both the home and school. Students are familiar with cell phones, the Internet, and social networking. In our science programs we try to integrate technology. Students learn how scientists and engineers use technology to investigate and solve problems. We try to let students work like scientists in researching, sharing and discussing their results. Together, they are able to observe and establish models of how the world works. We serve a variety of students. Some are preparing for future study in science or engineering, while others are merely meeting their science requirements. In either case, we want students to be able to visualize the properties of the world around them.

My Project

The laptop requested will be connected to current technology available in my science classroom. Uses will include: • Connection to a Document Camera to record photos and video clips of science demonstrations for the whole class or student groups to view and analyze. • Connection to Vernier data collection and analysis sensors for students to view real-time data of science experiments. The laptop also allows the class to collect and view data outside the classroom. One example from Physics is for students collect sound intensity and frequency data from a variety of sources for comparison. • Recording and analysis of student data from group experiments. Students record their graphical or numerical results from labs on the laptop for the class to view. The students can then look for trends and comparisons as done by actual scientists. Lab results and research presentations can also be brought up on their lab computers allowing students to share on the SmartBoard.

For the past several years we have used an interactive SmartBoard, projector, document camera and Vernier data collection software for student engagement in learning science.

This equipment has allowed students think and act like scientists in generating models of science concepts. The computer formerly used with this equipment was 10 years old and finally quit. A new laptop will again provide our students the chance to interact with real-world data and with each other.
