Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are natural Inquirers! They love to ask questions about their environment, and how things are made; hence their affinity towards mathematics, technology and science.

Many plan their entire high-school experience around the idea that they will be applying for some of the most competitive universities out there.

Even with their personal challenges that they experience day in and day out, they always keep their eyes on the prize. Growing up in a low-income community where opportunities appear to be dwindling every day, my students live by the credos, "Don't just find resources, but be resourceful!"

With the advances of technology in education, I as a teacher can now bring the "someday" into the "today." Mathematics and technology go hand-in-hand and its often challenging to make lessons and experiences in real-time and relevant to some of my students. I have lessons that involve creating models with popsicle sticks, cardboard and other types of material I have at the moment. One big piece of tech that is constantly advancing forward is the 3D printing of traditionally crafted parts. For example, being able to 3D print parts for a costume with a computer rather than sewing and stitching things together or printing car parts instead of manufacturing through heavy machinery. Much of this technology lends itself to understanding how to optimize volume and surface area.

We will be using this specific item to make 3-D models to help students better conceptualize and apply their understanding of calculus (integration). I currently use slices of bread to visualize integration to my students, but with a 3-D printing machine, we can see how its done in the tech world.
