My Students
My students attend school in a very diverse area. We are a semi-rural county but are just minutes from a city. Seventy-five percent of our students are receiving free or reduced-price lunch, but we also have some middle class families.
Many students face hardships due to their socioeconomic status and are struggling with academic and social issues.
We are one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Brunswick County. We are a high priority school and our students struggle with standardized testing.
Our teachers are committed to trying many different strategies to help students learn. One problem we face is lack of motivation. It is difficult for students to concentrate on school when there is so much more going on in their lives. We believe that with hard work and creative strategies, we can motivate students so every child can be successful!
My Project
My students are learning about Ancient Civilizations. I am asking for Chromebooks to allow them to research and see for themselves what these civilizations offered.
The biggest hurdle I face with my students is lack of motivation.
Chromebooks are one of the best ways to get children interested in the topics we are studying. Ancient Egypt, India, Mesopotamia, China, Greece and Rome come to life when children can see vivid pictures and videos, as well as research stories about these civilizations. From King Tut''s tomb to Mount Olympus, kids' interest is piqued.
Chromebooks are so versatile in what they allow children to do. They can make up their own Quizlet games, Use Flipgrid to summarize their learning, and collaborate on a Google doc just to name a few. Our school is rich in curriculum, but our technology does not meet the needs of our population which keeps growing. I am sure that these added Chromebooks will motivate my kids to take an adventurous journey to the ancient lands. Once students are motivated, success is within reach, which is my goal for my students.
