Visionaries in Training: Dissecting the Mysteries of the Eye

Help me give my students a rare opportunity to see physics and biology collide during a cow eye dissection where they will explore how the eye acts works to bend, focus, and interpret light waves.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

CAMS students are curious, creative, and eager to explore the world around them. They love diving into science, especially when they can get hands-on with real-world applications. This year, I want to give them a memorable experience by introducing them to the incredible science behind human vision through cow eye dissection!

WHY DOES THIS PROJECT MATTER?

With this project, my middle school students will have the opportunity to explore the physics and anatomy of the eye by dissecting cow eyeballs—an exciting and educational experience that aligns well with two of our units standards this year: Waves and Electromagnetic Radiation (NGSS-MS-PS4) and Structures and Functions of Organisms (NGSS-MS-LS1).

The materials for this project will provide preserved cow eyeballs for dissection, disposable safety gloves, sanitizing supplies, replacement safety glasses for scratched and worn out equipment, and 3-D models as an additional and alternative way to explore.

By funding this project, you will help bring science to life in our classroom. The students will gain a deeper understanding of the eye’s structure and function, including the cornea, lens, retina, and optic nerve, as well as the process of how light is transformed into vision. This hands-on activity will reinforce their learning of waves and anatomy and inspire future interests in science.

Dissection is an unforgettable experience that makes abstract concepts real for students. It allows them to engage with science in a way that is both interactive and meaningful. This project will not only enhance their understanding of the human body but also promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Your generous donation will ensure that all students, regardless of background, can participate in this exciting scientific exploration. Let’s inspire the next generation of scientists, nurses, researchers, doctors, and engineers!
