My students need medicine balls, weights, plyometric boxes, and other equipment to start our non-profit CrossFit school affiliate and principles of fitness class.
"Success is not a goal, it's a by-product."
A typical day in my class is energetic and motivating. With this class in particular, I want my students to have a genuine love for fitness by the end of the year and continue pursuing their fitness goals. The biggest obstacle is a lack of equipment.
My students are 9th-12th grade students who will be taking this course for dual credit (they will receive high school and college credit).
We are science and arts, college prep, public charter school. We were recently approved as the first and only non-profit CrossFit school affiliate in our state. Students here are motivated to work hard and achieve their personal goals. This is especially evident in our core classes, but in the past we haven't been able to carry this motivation over into the areas of sport and fitness. We do not have any sports other than a swim team here. This course will give students an opportunity to train for CrossFit competitions and feel like they are part of a much larger fitness community. Our students are respectful and willing to learn new things, this class is brand new for the 2016-2017 school year. These students need an athletic outlet that will help them deal with the academic stress they feel as a part of a college prep school.
My Project
Students will use the equipment requested to train. I recently passed my CrossFit Level 1 coaching course to be able to help students learn to exercise in a mechanically safe and consistent manner. The equipment requested is just the tip of the iceberg, we need much more than what I am requesting, but this is some of the most basic equipment to help get us started. The class will consist of short lectures that lead to movement labs. We will work on the biomechanics of movement and progress from category 1 to category 3 movements. Eventually, we will have to test these movement patterns under varying intensities. The equipment will primarily service the "Workout of the Day" otherwise known as a WOD in CrossFit terms. The students will be getting a Physical Education credit from a local university and will need to get in a set amount of hours during their workouts throughout the year including workouts that emphasize strength training, gymnastics, and metabolic conditioning.
My project will make a difference because fitness is the foundation of everything else we do in life.
There are numerous studies touting the benefits of physical activity for academic success. Student self esteem, sense of well being, and confidence will increase as a result of this class. Most things we learn in high school are quickly forgotten, this particular class will build a foundation for continued fitness in the future that moves well beyond high school and into their adult lives.
