Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 10th grade Biology in a low income school with limited resources. I do my best to make sure my students have fun with science in my classroom and embrace being a scientist. My students are absolutely amazing and I want to give them the education they deserve. I am passionate about finding new ways to make learning Biology fun and interactive for my students.

Many of them have not had the opportunity to experience Virtual Reality and see how it can change their lives both in and out of school.

I want to see their reactions when they experience being transported to a new place using Virtual Reality headsets. They deserve the best education and I keep trying to do new things so that I can better meet their needs and allow them to thrive in my Biology classroom

My Project

While getting my undergraduate degree, I was in charge of Elon University's maker space and was introduced to Virtual Reality. When I went back to Elon for my Masters degree, I learned about how Virtual Reality can be used to help teach any subject. Virtual reality or VR is becoming more popular both in and out of the classroom. Many people including my students do not have the means to get their hands on VR equipment and experience how truly amazing it is. Teaching in a low income school, many students have also not been given the opportunity to travel around the country or world. VR can change that!

While learning about food chains with apex predators, I can transport my students to the African savanna to come face to face with a pride of lions or dive deep into the ocean and swim with sharks.

I can take my students all over the world to learn and allow them experience places they have only dreamed about going to. I want to give my students the best education possible and having VR headsets will give me the opportunity to show my students new places, animals and people from around the world. VR can change how my biology class learns. Instead of learning about something through pictures or videos, they can be transported there using VR and experience education in a whole new way.
