Virtual Play Therapy!

My Students

I run the school-based mental health clinic at our wonderful school. Due to the COVID 19 health crisis, I've had to continue our services via teletherapy. Teletherapy has been a challenge for me, as well as many of my students. We've transitioned from in-person nondirective play therapy to a mixture of phone and video services.

With little notice of closure, I was able to fill a bag with some books and a few puppets, but nowhere near the materials I've wound up needing.

After several weeks of this transition, it's become clear to me that I need both bulk up and change up the materials I use with my students, whether that's in person or over video/message. I'm looking for teletherapy materials to make this transition a little easier, that I can also use to help transition the students back to school when it's safe.

My Project

I've included headphones to lend out to several students who may struggle with finding a private space for our sessions. Privacy is something they've come to rely on in my school office, and engaging in services from home presents challenges in this area.

Play therapy materials, such as a doll with interchangeable feelings expressions, and therapeutic question cards will be helpful over our video sessions, but can also be used with students who are only able to access services over the phone.

Journals and colored pencils are materials that were sadly left behind, and will be useful for my students to be able to document and share their feelings, both in quarantine and as we transition back.
