Vending Machine: Serving Up Books, Not Soda

My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds. We serve some students that are very transient and other students that have the benefit of extended family in the area. We used to be a small town but they are building in our area as fast as they can and we are adjusting to the growth as fast as we can.

We serve students who are low income and may not have educational support beyond our school.

We take these challenges as an opportunity to be more creative in reaching our students.

My Project

Reading is an essential skill and schools and libraries provide instruction, resources, and opportunities to improve upon this skill.

But, nothing gets a kid as excited about reading as having their own books.

Our county does not have a book store and school book fairs are one of the only places students have the opportunity to purchase books for themselves. For some families the book fair is a financial hardship. Currently, schools are not having book fairs not only because of COVID but because more families than before are facing financial difficulties.

A book vending machine will allow students to earn tokens through positive behaviors, improved grades and work ethic, and even through citizenship! All students regardless of income will have the chance to have their own book.
