Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Teaching high school students is one of the most rewarding parts of my day. My students come to Spanish class with curiosity, personality, humor, and a growing sense of who they are in the world. What I love about them is their willingness to try, to learn, and to step into something new, even when it feels unfamiliar. They bring creativity, bold questions, and a desire for experiences that feel real and meaningful.

This ¡Vamos a Cocinar!

project gives my students exactly that with a chance to learn Spanish not just from a book but with their hands, senses, and teamwork. Through cooking, collaboration, and cultural exploration, they can make connections that last far beyond the classroom. This project matters because students thrive when learning is relevant, interactive, and connected to real-life skills. Food offers a powerful cultural bridge. When students prepare dishes from Spanish-speaking countries, they aren’t just memorizing vocabulary—they’re living it. This project supports language learning, cultural appreciation, communication, and confidence in a way that is tangible, joyful, and unforgettable.

What I love about my students is that they are open-minded, collaborative, creative thinkers who are motivated by hands-on experiences and developing real-world skills. Their enthusiasm inspires me to create learning opportunities that feel authentic and memorable. The ingredients bring Spanish vocabulary and cultural traditions to life. Students practice using Spanish food and cooking vocabulary, sharing what they learned about Spanish-speaking culture and foods, and speaking and presentation skills.

In conclusion, ¡Vamos a Cocinar! is more than just cooking—it is community, culture, language, identity, and joy in one experience. My high school students deserve learning that sparks excitement and helps them connect to the world in meaningful ways. This project allows them to learn Spanish by doing, creating memories and skills that last long after the final dish is served.
