For most, it was their first time using the pastels and I gave them a great history and back story to how oil pastels came into the art world. \r\n\r\nI did a demo with them using the doc cam and taught them blending and shading techniques. Next, we all used a reference image to draw and complete the assignment. Kids finished in around 3 days and were so proud of their work! In our photography unit, students used the Gelli Plates to transfer their photos and added acrylic paint to make an artwork. We are the only program in the county doing this with photography and the students were elated! Some have no background in photography and this has made them feel really successful. As the program grows, I look forward to funding more of these plates for a whole class set- the students will continue to use them beyond this one assignment.
