Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My colleague and I have eight classes consisting of 140 students, most English Language Learners with various disabilities, including Specific Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Emotional Disorders, Autism, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Other Health Impairments, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Most of our students spend the entire school day in the same classes with the same students because they have needs that the general education program cannot meet. For example, they require flexible seating, manipulatives, and proximity to a teacher to keep their attention and engagement in classroom instruction and activities. Unfortunately, our school has outdated classrooms and furniture that do not meet our students’ needs. Although our students may learn differently from their typically developing peers, they deserve to have whatever it takes to allow them the opportunity to gain experience, learn and grow in a safe, developmentally appropriate, and engaging environment!

My Project

A classroom environment needs to be inviting and accommodating of all abilities and learning styles. Currently, our Special Education 7th and 8th grade Special Day Class and Co-Taught Resource Math students only have the option of sitting in rigid, metal chairs that can become uncomfortable very quickly.

By modifying our existing seating, our students can get their wiggles out without interrupting the learning throughout the day.

Different seating types, such as wiggle stools kick bands for chair legs, are advantageous for providing safety, improving posture, and retaining their attention while in the classroom. Students can use these new seating to better integrate into learning activities with the class. Wiggle/wobble stools and kick bands for chair legs give them a chance if they must fidget, wiggle, and move around without disrupting the rest of the class. We want to provide safe seating and learning alternatives for all our students to teach them self-awareness of their learning needs. Some students need a small sensory item or a fidget to relieve stress and anxiety.

Kick Bands, Wiggle Stools, Stress-Relieving Poppers, and Squishes will be made available to our students daily. When our bodies can be engaged in a mindless physical task such as wiggling, bouncing our feet, or fidgeting, our brains can entirely focus on learning the skills being taught in the classroom. These options will be ideal for any student, especially my sensory-seeking students and students with ADHD.

Additionally, having a rolling computer podium will allow me to move about the room to have closer proximity to individual students while simultaneously using my computer to wirelessly cast the learning materials to the projector for the entire class.
